BUILD TUNE RACE RC YACHTS
Selective Concentration
Concentration is one of my sailing issues. I did some research on Microsoft Copilot and this is what I found and am employing in my sailing.

SOme will have seen a hint of AI in the articles I post. I write the article and think it is good, then I ask AI to rewrite it and it shows me up every time. The facts are the same but the quality of writing is so much better. I did some investigation into concentration under pressure and the research led to this. I hope it helps.
Selective attention under pressure is probably the key mental skill separating good sailors from champions. It is not about concentrating harder. It is about concentrating on the right things while ignoring everything else.
In an IOM race there may be 100 pieces of information available:
Other boats shouting
Fleet positions
Previous race results
Wind on the water
Start countdown
Boat speed
Marks
Spectators
Commentary
Championship standings
Your last mistake
The best sailors consciously focus on perhaps 3-5 critical pieces of information and tune out the rest.
The Racing Funnel
Think of attention like a funnel.
Before the Start
Focus only on:
Line bias
First shift
Time and distance
Ignore:
Championship position
Last race result
Who beat you yesterday
First Beat
Focus only on:
Pressure
Shifts
Fleet positioning
Ignore:
Whether you're 1st or 15th
Finish result projections
Mark Rounding
Focus only on:
Inside overlap
Exit speed
Next tactical decision
Ignore everything else.
The "One Question" Method
When pressure rises, ask yourself one question repeatedly.
Examples:
"Where is the next shift?"
"Where is the pressure?"
"What wins the next 30 seconds?"
This keeps your brain in the present.
The moment your mind goes to
"I need a top five."
"I'm leading the championship."
"I can't afford a bad result."
your attention leaves the race and enters the future.
Training Exercise at Club Racing
For one entire race focus only on:
Wind shifts.
Nothing else.
Every 10 seconds ask:
"Has the wind headed or lifted?"
You will be amazed how much more you see.
In the next race focus only on:
Pressure patterns
Then:
Fleet positioning
Then:
Start-line spacing
This trains attention in isolation.
Develop a Trigger Word
Elite athletes often use a cue word.
Examples:
"Present"
"Now"
"Pressure"
"Observe"
Whenever you notice distraction:
Say the word internally.
Look at the water.
Identify one useful piece of information.
The sequence becomes:
Distracted → Trigger → Refocus
A Sailing-Specific Drill for You
At Datchet, spend ten minutes watching races without sailing.
Your only job is to predict:
Which side of the beat will gain.
Which boats will cross ahead.
Which gust arrives first.
This develops selective attention without the workload of controlling a boat.
The Biggest Mistake
Most sailors think concentration means:
"Don't get distracted."
Actually it means:
"Recover quickly when distracted."
Even world champions lose focus repeatedly.
The difference is that they realise it after 2 seconds, not 2 minutes.
"Read the water. Sail the boat. Ignore the noise."
Those three instructions cover almost everything that matters when pressure is highest. The more you can reduce your focus to those essentials, the more your tactical decisions will reflect your actual ability rather than the stress of the moment.
